Just completed a Family Tree University course: Cemetery Research 101: Dig Up Your Family History. The awesome Instructor and friend Midge Frazel of Granite in My Blood.

I thought that there were lots of great material, reading assignments, and down to earth exercises. A real task master. The course was a four week course, not over bearing, good pace. One or two "home work" assignments to visit a cemetery. [Midge = Visit a Cemetery. I got that, just read her blog.]

For the third assignment, we were to Choose a gravestone to examine and photograph (if possible). Look at all sides for information. Then we were to Write a short summary. I wrote:

Tillie Smith. She died in Defence of her honor Apr 16 1886. Erected by all Appreciative Public. Has the only known Photograph of her. More information on here can be found here: http://www.hackettstownhistory.com/article_tillie_smith.shtml

The Mystery of Tillie Smith: She was murdered "just of the street" from where I live at Centenary College, then Centenary Collegiate Institute where she lived and worked. This story "shocked Victorian Hackettstown" [quote from the above website].

FTU - Cemetery Research 101 - Lesson 2 - Preparation for a Visit

One of the fun things about being a Find-A-Grave volunteer is going out, in all kinds of weather to take pictures. When someone finds a Memorial on Find-A-Grave and there isn't a picture of a headstone, there is a way to Request a Photo.

The button on the right is selected, some questions are asked, and an Email is sent to volunteers within a 10 mile radius of the ZipCode of the Cemetery. That email will have information that comes from this memorial and the volunteer can go take the picture.

Before I go out, I do some homework, especially in this cemetery. It's quite large and I might not have time to walk around. So, I find it helpful to do a couple of things.

One of the first searches that I do, on Find-A-Grave, is to search for other memorials eith the SAME Surname. From the Cemetery Name, I enter the Surname.

Its the bottom Search box on the Left. This will bring up a report:

There are 5 people with this Surname in this cemetery. There are ICONs that indicate if there is a Photo of a headstone. The one I was looking for is the bottom item, but just above there is a "RIP" image. I will look at that image to see if there are any hints as to where the head stone is located.

If this was an image on that memorial, I look at what is in the Background. Some distance from the Trees, with a small tree next to the stone. There is signs of a paved road between the row of stones and the 2 trees in the upper right. There is a larger stone with a bush to the Left. Those will be helpful in visually finding where this known stone is, and might help locate the stone what I want to take a picture of. Hint's of where to locate a stone are helpful.

Another hint, when looking for a female, is to not just look at the married surname but also the birth surname. In Find-A-Grave, the birth surname is in italic.

Another feature of Find-A-Grave, if the owner of the Memorial has done so, relationships are established, where you can click on the Spouse, our other relationships that might be there, will take you to that Memorial page.

Lesson Learned: Do some research before you visit the cemetery.

FTU - Cemetery Research 101 - Lesson 2 - Search the Cemetery

I recently posted this: Family Tree University Cemetery Research 101 - Lesson 2 - FInd a Cemetery.

That is how I find a cemetery and what I do in preparation for a visit to a cemetery. That is the physical location. Now, how about who has been recorded as being buried there. For Find-A-Grave, the "memorials" are created by volunteers. I am one of them, but that's a topic for another day. What I need to do now is get a handle on who might be there. It already appears that my person is buried there. In fact, there are three Hiram Deats listed, one with Jr, one with a middle initial of "E". But who else is there. We know that there are 37 people with this surname in 3 cemeteries in this county. Since my person is there, who else.

Back to the Cemetery page, we'll do a search.

The search box is on the Left, and is the 2nd box outlined in red. I generally start broadly then if I get too many results, will refine the search later. In this case, will just enter the Surname.

There are 21 people with this Surname in this Cemetery. including the 3 that had been listed before. There must be a story here, where most 21 of the 37 are buried here. Looks like it will be a successful trip.

Since my trip is to take pictures, of the one person I was looking for, here is the first Trick:

Trick One: Take a picture of the Cemetery Name or Sign, BEFORE taking any other pictures.

This tells me, that "the following pictures were taken at 'this' cemetery".

That should help. But, there was also another one. (2nd Picture)

The driveway was a little to the right of where this sign is, so I just walked forward toward the tree on the Left. There was a promising monument, and it was. It was a headstone for that Surname.

Looked around and found one of the three.

Can't be this easy. A large monument, and one of the three I had found before I left, but there were one a few headstones here, out of the 21 I expected to find. Not sure this is "my guy".

Next step: Look Around. Look at both sides of stones.

Continued to take pictures of my findings.

On the other side of that tree, mentioned earlier, was another monument.

This was THE monument I was looking for. Surrounding this monument were footstones. There is three generations of genealogical information, dates, relationships, on this one monument.

The first monument was found just to the left of the tree, where the first arrow is, and the large monument is where the left arrow is.

There must be a story here somewhere. Why the two plots, not that far apart in the same Cemetery.

Based on this one trip, taking pictures of the 'data', written in stone, recording that information and doing some Census Record searching, the family or families presented on that monument can be put together.

Lesson Learned: Do some research on the Cemetery you plan to visit before making the journey.

Lesson Learned: Keep looking around.

Family Tree University Cemetery Research 101 - Lesson 2 - FInd a Cemetery

As if there isn't enough to do, I decided that I would take an online class offered at the Family Tree University on Cemetery Research: taught by Midge Frazel of Granite in my Blood fame.

I have been interested in digging a little deeper into the subject, after all I have given a couple of presentations on the us the Find-A-Grave website. Our second week assignment was on what we might do in preparation for a cemetery visit. Here is part of the presentation I have given in preparation for a Cemetery Visit.

First you have to find the cemetery.

This is from a real life experience. I was given a Name and the County where this person lived. Here is what I knew:

I went to the Find-A-Grave website and this is the first screen and where the search was made from.

The next screen I will enter USA, tab to the State, hit "n" until New Jersey appear, then selected Hunterdon County.

The results were 169 Cemeteries in Hunterdon County. Had to refine the search, so I added ONLY the Surname.

The results were 37 people with this surname, buried in 3 Cemeteries. The Cemeteries are listed on the Left.

In that list were three names that were who I was looking for.

All three were in the SAME cemetery. In this case, and other cases, DON'T jump to conclusions. These three names may or may not be related.

Clicking on the Cemetery Name, on the Right will take you to the Find-A-Grave page for that Cemetery.

On the left is the address, if there is one, for the cemetery. I have found a wide variety of detail in that space for any cemetery.

On the right is some helpful information, like the number of interments there. That is ONLY the number that has been added to Find-A-Grave be a volunteer. There is a search box to search for a specific name. Note: Just because a name isn't returned, doesn't mean that they aren't buried there.

Below the pictures on the Right, is a map.

Note the GPS information just above the Map.

Since I haven't been here before, I wanted to take a look at what the area looks like. I know my GPS will get me there, but what should I look for before I come up to the cemetery. Using the Satellite View is helpful.

Farm land on the Left and trees with some houses on the Right. But the cemetery looks like it will be easy to spot and it's right on the road. I should be driving from the top of the map to the bottom, so I will look for farmland to my right, and the trees and houses on the Left. BUT, what is the name of that road. Clicking on the Hybrid View will help me.

This is what I know, so far, about this Cemetery.

Another post will follow on determining IF this is a cemetery I want to visit. But now I know where this one is.

Flight 93 National Memorial - Signs tell the story

At the entrance to the Sacred Ground of the Flight 93 National Memorial, is a small set of entrance gates. It is very simple, but there are some signs, with pictures and some brief statements to help tell the story for what happened September 11, 2001.

Sunday, September 11, 2011 - 10 years later

10 years after the events of 09/11/01, the Flight 93 National Memorial was opened, dedicated the day before (09/10/11).

Over the years, my parents visited many, many National Parks around the country. I'll have to count them one day. My family and I have visited some of them. But, never on the First Full Day that a National Memorial was open to the public.

Within this past year, I visited "Ground Zero", and in May, visited the Pentagon. Ground Zero has always been a problem for me, as my last memory of that the World Trade Center was a visit that my family had with my cousin Bernice, Jody, Julie, John, and my daughters Carrie and Jennie. It wasn't long after that visit that Bernice died, way too young, of cancer. We had a great day, standing on top of the world, the awesome view of New York City, to the west New Jersey, and it Schooleys Mountain had been a little taller, perhaps we would have seen home. But how the compares to the events that took place 10 years ago is not within my capacity to reason.

It was important for Patti and I to visit this sacred ground, on a field in southeastern Pennsylvania. At the last minute, we decided to "take a trip", first to Gettysburg (another story) and the Flight 93 National Memorial. No planning, not knowing what to expect, nor, for me at least, the significance of the event that took place here.

We drove around for hours trying to find a place to sleep, as we had been on the road all day, with a stop over at the Gettysburg Battle Ground. Very tired, Patti went to sleep and I watch the re-play of the Ceremonies that had taken place earlier in the day. Then the reason for our small adventure became clear. To be part of the many, many people you would be at this sacred place to let the Families and Friends of 40 people know, that We Will Never Forget.

Across the field was where the memorial is located. This place had become familiar from the various TV programs that we on TV, specifically in this area, as this is where it happened.

Arriving at the Entrance, we got word that the Memorial would not be open for a while. Based on what we saw in the area, we knew something special was happening. The TV had said that President Obama would be here, and he was. In a little over 3 months, Patti and I had been "so close" to our president, both times laying a wreath. In May, our trip to DC and the Pentagon, at the laying of the wreath at the Arlington National Cemetery.

As we waited, folks were leaving these sacred grounds. By now, some of the faces were familiar, but many had tags and pictures of loved ones. They were the Families and friend of these 40 Hero's of Flight 93.

Many family members were in the area and at this point were leaving to return to their homes after meeting with President Obama. The clergy person above, had been on the TV earlier in the day offering his prayers for the families.

Sometimes New Media are not helpful, and I am sure they weren't this time either, but thinking about that a moment, they were recording, for us, a way to remember the events 10 years earlier. Not that it will help the Families and Friends, but to help our future generations get a glimpse of what happened 10 years ago, and today.

The Memorial Wall is incredible in it's design. Like other memorial walls, they have the names of those involved. But this wall is laid out in such a way, that it is the Path that Flight 93 was on when it hit the ground. (those pictures will be posted at a more appropriate time)

As were hundreds, or thousands of "bikers", paying their respect.

RestingSpot - a new tombstone application

My Cemetery Visiting friend at Granite In My Blood, posted this blog post recently.

Resting Spot

I had seen this new application a couple of days earlier, but didn't do anything about it. Midge, hinted that I would try it out. Well, I did.

Looks like a really cool utility to have in one's Cemetery Tool Kit.

My initial findings are this:

The Application, for the iPad, requires an active internet connection. Since my iPad 2 only has WiFi, I was unable to do anything, but to take a picture. Getting home, I was able to upload the image, BUT, the GPS information for the image was not from the cemetery.

Midge's experience with the developers at Resting Spot was very helpful, as was my experience with them. The response from my request to have the image removed, as the GPS information was my home, they removed the Memorial / Resting Spot.

I may try, at a later time, to allow my smart phone be a Hot Spot, and try to link the iPad 2 to the Hot Spot.

On their Website, there is a link to the iPhone / iPad APP Store, but the Android APP link is not currently active. In the discussion with the very helpful folk at Resting Spot, the Android APP should be out soon.

A Divine(ing) Day

Over the past several months a couple of us, cemetery hunters, were looking for an old, local family burial ground. The Colver Family Burial Ground located on Schooleys Mountain, Morris County, New Jersey USA. Information about this family burial ground can be found on the Find-A-Grave website. The details that we knew were on the website so we knew where is should have been found.

A 1971 note indicated that the property had a new home under construction. So, we really had a pretty good idea where it was. However, what was not in the information we had, was the fact that the older house, next door, was owned by a member of the Colver family. Or so the story goes.

Earlier a couple of us met with the owner of the older house. What a wonder hostess. Let us snoop briefly around this old house. She took us around her property, and made a comment about one piece of her property where she felt very peaceful. (hold that thought, I told her)

We walked through the woods, but based on some information from someone who had sent an email about this burial ground, we knew there should be a headstone somewhere. We had some pictures taken from the are of the new house. Not confirmed yet, but the new house was probably part of the older house owners property. Some old plot maps pretty much confirmed that.

We did stumble on what might have been an old headstone, but weren't sure. Since the neighbors weren't home, we didn't want to spend time on that property.

Vowing to return "later this summer" we went our own ways to do some more research. In an old map, there were several burial grounds in the area. One of which I have blogged about earlier. But there wasn't any markings on this property.

Today, two different township Historical Society presidents, and Random Acts Of Genealogy Kindness volunteer, and I met. Two of them were the ones who made the earlier visit with the pictures we saw on our first visit. They KNEW where they last saw the one headstone that remained.

According to Find-A-Grave there were 15 people buried there, but a note from 1938 indicated that there were 9 gravestones found.

A quick aside, this area about 20 years ago, had problems with well water. There wasn't enough left "on the mountain" to support new housing. No one could find water, or enough water. They had even called in people who used Divining Rods to find water. No luck.

After I told our expanded group of headstone "hunters" about the peaceful feeling the property owner had, we went to the area she mentioned. The area was nicely mowed. One of our group said that she would join us in a moment. She had to get "something" out of her car. We already had a number of camera, so that wasn't it.

She brought two Divining Rods with her. She has had experience in using them in identifying burial's in cemeteries.

So, she starts her walk down the center of this small plot of ground with the rods parallel to the ground and parallel to each other, point toward to back end of this plot.

Probably 10 feed in, the rods started to cross each other.

As she moved forward that actually crossed.

As see move toward that back of this mowed plot, they crossed 3 more times. Whoa.

She continued up one side of this plot and in the exact same spot, probably 10 feet from her first pass, the rods crossed 3 more times. So, we had 4 sets of events where the rods identified 'something'.

Each of us, in tern, including the property owner, walked the area and had the same experience in the same place. We had the property owner walk up the other side of the mowed area. Guess what, same 4 spots the rods crossed. I must admit, that I had to try this out. First time I have ever touched them, but followed the "how to" instructions, those rods moved.

We will probably never know for sure, what is under the ground, but to have 12 spots, in a 3 by 4 grid certainly leaves some questions about what is going on under the ground. But, for now, I will leave it as Sacred Ground.

Is this the Family Burial Ground? Or could it be a Leni Lenope Burial ground which was also in the area.

Now back to the search for that headstone.

Since we had the photographer who took the earlier pictures, we went to where we saw a stone earlier. He confirmed that we found was not what he had found 5 years earlier.

He had talked to the owner of the "new" house property owner, and he had move the headstone so that his kids would play in the yard, didn't want them to get hurt.

Following our guide, we found the old headstone.

This photo was taken with a cell phone, but others "in the gang" took better photos. We are trying to determine which of the 15 names listed in Find-A-Grave, this headstone might be for. The listing in Find-A-Grave came from, the best the we can tell, a group in Morris County who had done inventories in many other local cemeteries in the early 1900's.

Through photo editing, we should be able to pull the text from the stone and will post in on Find-A-Gave.

Can honestly say that this was a first for me, and wanted to share it here.
